Work/Life Balance - Stress Relief

WORK/LIFE BALANCE - STRESS RELIEF
Are you suffering from the 3 p.m. slump at the office, barely able to keep your eyes open — only to find yourself unable to keep them closed at night when you go to bed?

The culprit may be stress. So how do you beat stress and alleviate the 3 p.m. slump? Most of us drag ourselves to the coffee pot or grab a soda for a caffeine blast. That may get you the jolt you're looking for at work, but give you the jitters at night, adding to the stress of another sleepless night. Here are some things you can do instead:

Breathe.
Medical professionals now recognize yoga's health benefit as a stress reliever. Yoga focuses on breathing to relieve stress. And you get the added benefit of great stretches that can help alleviate muscle tension, as well. Taking a class after work can help you relax at bedtime. Plus, there are some great moves you can do at your desk to wake up and revitalize:

  • Raise your arms straight up above your head.
  • Flap your hands really fast.
  • Breathe in and out quickly.

Walk.
Instead of going for the coffee pot to perk you up, take a walk. It's a much better way to wake up, and it won't keep you awake at night. Speaking of night, a light stroll two hours before bed can actually help you sleep better.

Eat breakfast.
Breakfast eaters have better concentration and productivity on the job, according to the Yale - New Haven Hospital from over 30 years of compiled research.

Snack.
But skip the candy bar. Proteins like low-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, or peanut butter can really boost your energy.

Eat dinner.
Take the time to sit down, eat slowly, and add a few carbs; they're great for helping you get to the land of nod, stress free.
